Penelope Trunk is a fantastic blogger.
One of my favourite recent(ish) posts from her is entitled This is why all your goals are bad for you.
She says most of us set goals for ourselves that we want to achieve, but we fail to consider whether we will actually enjoy or benefit from the process of what we will have to do in order to achieve those goals.
Say for example I want to be a great guitarist...but do I genuinely enjoy the process of getting down to practise the guitar? Or I want to be a top blogger - but do I enjoy the activity of writing the blog content?
So we need to consider, what will I actually enjoy doing? - or, looking deeper, we need to recognise and pursue the only true goal there is, which is "about finding your best self – always changing, always elusive ... any goal worth having is a goal to change your life to suit that best self."
I have to agree, up to a point. I believe that each of us has a 'best self' that we would do well to discover. But this is too small an aim.
Think about it. If I have a potential best self,and everyone I know also has a best self.. one immediate path to significance and meaning for me, is to contribute, support, value, partner the people around me and help them to find their best selves.
Come on, people, let's lift our eyes beyond our little best selves,love our neighbours best selves as much as we love our own. Imagine if everyone did this!
